The Kashmir valley has been described as one of the most beautiful places on earth. It has also been referred to as the “Switzerland of India”. Together with Jammu and Ladakh provinces, this tract is a conglomeration of beautiful valleys, crystal clear lakes, gurgling streams and places of worship.

Srinagar (Alt 1500 mts)- Sringar is the destination of thousands of visitors each year. The rail-head is at Jammu and from there one has to drive along the mountain highway 07 to 08 hours before reaching the enchanting Kashmir valley. The gigantic Pir Panjal range is crossed at Banihal and soon after the traveller emerges from the Jawahar tunnel under the Pir Panjal. He is spell bound by the beautiful panorma the Kashmir Valley offers . the flat valley is made up of terraced paddy fields; poplar groves; apple orchards; fairy-tale villages and limpid lakes, which are surrounded by imposing snow-clad peaks – the great Himalaya in the north and the Pir Panjal in the south.
Srinagar, the largest town in the Kashmir valley, is criss-crossed by the river Jhelum, which slowly makes its way through the town. Hundreds of houseboats float in the Jhelum. There are the homes of a large number of people. The river is also used as a waterway by small boats known as shikaras. The town is a shoppers paradise.

The famous Dal Lake is situated at one end of the town. Its banks are lined by the famous Mughal gardens – the Shalimar Bagh, Nishat and pari Mahal being the most beautiful. Scores of hotels have sprung up on the Lake front. Houseboats float in the lake waters.
Places, worth visiting are the Shankaracharya hill which commands a spectacular view of the Kashmir Valley, and its surrounds; Hari Parbat, char Chinar, and the Dachigham National Park which is the home of thefamous Kashmir Stag- the hangul; Wular and Nagin Lakes; and the ruins at Avantipur.

Leh – Leh is the largest town of Ladakh region. It is situated in a valley in the central region of Ladakh at an elevation of 3800 mts. Leh lies in the shadow of the Ladakh range. A good motor road connects Srinagar and Leh. It crosses the great Himalayan range and descends to the Ladakh plateau.

This town is famous for its monasteries where time seems to stand still. The best time to visit Leh is between early June and late September where the Srinagar – Leh road remains open. Leh is also connected to the rest of the country by regular flights.
